1,400 Brownfield Properties Assessed in 2017
Since the beginning of the EPA's Brownfields program in 1995, more than 27,000 properties have been assessed throughout the country, including more than 1,400 in the last fiscal year. A Brownfield property is one where the redevelopment or reuse of the property may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Revitalizing Brownfield properties protects the environment, reuses existing infrastructure, minimizes urban sprawl, and creates economic opportunities.
Redevelopment and reuse are typically attractive for Brownfield properties because of their location efficiency to population centers while eliminating the need for developing greenfield locations. Federal and state agencies provide grants and financing options for contaminated properties that have redevelopment potential. In Michigan, the MDEQ provides Brownfield grants and loans for potential projects promoting the reuse of Brownfield properties and offering economic development potential. The MDEQ grants and loans can be used for:
- Environmental evaluations/assessments
- Baseline Environmental Assessments
- Due care planning and implementation
- Response Activities
- Demolition, lead, mold, and asbestos abatement
