The American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) Michigan Section is hosting it annual workshop on June 13-14, 2023 in Roscommon, Michigan. The 12th Annual AIPG Michigan Section Workshop, held at the McMullen Conference Center, is an annual training event focused on providing quality technical information and case studies. The topic for this year’s workshop is The Basics to the Latest in Contaminant Fate & Transport.
In its workshop overview, the AIPG Michigan Section explains why Contaminant Fate & Transport is this year’s topic: “We have learned over time that the fate and transport of hazardous substances in the environment is variable and not always predictable. There are general rules of thumb that we expect for well-studied contaminants with similar characteristics particularly when one substance is released in homogeneous subsurface conditions. However, this is rarely the case due to the many variables that influence the migration, degradation, phase transformation, and persistence of compounds. Co-mingling of hazardous substances can be beneficial as the rate of degradation can be increased or decreased due to the influence of other contaminants. Emerging contaminants pose an entirely new set of challenges with too many unknowns to easily predict the fate and transport; yet, we must still work to protect receptors from exposure to them.”
Merit Laboratories is a proud participant and sponsor of the AIPG Michigan Section annual workshop. Merit Laboratories is one of the nation’s leading environmental testing laboratories, analyzing soil, wastewater, groundwater, drinking water, and other sample matrices for a diverse range of analytical parameters.
