Michigan’s Superfund Legislative Report Published

The State of Michigan published its annual Superfund report summarizing hazardous substance cleanups of the 65 Michigan sites that are funded by CERCLA (Superfund).  No new Michigan sites were added to the Superfund list in FY 2017. According to the MDEQ’s Remediation and Redevelopment Division, 10 of the state’s Superfund sites were in the operation and maintenance phase.

Since Superfund began, there has been a total of 84 sites in Michigan, 19 of which have been removed through response actions. The most recent Superfund site removed from the list is the Burrows Sanitation site in Van Buren County, which was delisted in 2015.  Only four sites have been removed in the last 10 years.

Superfund site summaries are presented in the report for all of the Michigan sites currently on the Superfund’s National Priorities List (NPL). Each summary discusses the site contamination, the cleanup actions, projected schedule for future cleanup activities, amount of federal Superfund money awarded to the site, and state match utilized. Here's the list of Michigan’s 65 Superfund sites (listed by county) presented in the report:
